Who we are

We are passionate about equal access and inclusion for everyone. When owner Suzi developed a hearing loss, she had plenty of moments out and about where she was been frustrated at the lack of basic awareness about how to communicate effectively with someone with a hearing loss. This led to her offering services for businesses to raise the profile of hearing loss, training staff to be more aware and help companies become more accessible.

Since 2024, Suzi has offered Signature-accredited British Sign Language (BSL) classes in Oxfordshire, whilst in the same year, Alice and Hannah started offering introductory courses as Simply Sign BSL. As former Deaf education professionals, we have found that you can take us out of the classroom but our passion for teaching continues on!

In September 2025, Suzi, Alice and Hannah joined forces to offer more accredited courses to spread the passion for BSL across the county and beyond.

Suzi Sentance

TSLI MA PGDip PGCE BA (Hons)

Suzi began to lose her hearing in 2014 and now has a moderate–severe hearing loss. She wears two hearing aids, and this experience became the catalyst for formally learning (BSL); a language that had fascinated her since childhood, after first learning to fingerspell at the age of eight. Suzi continued her studies and is currently completing her Level 6 qualification, alongside working as a Trainee Sign Language Interpreter, a role she began in October 2025.

Alongside her BSL journey, Suzi has a strong background in education. She spent ten years working as a mainstream primary teacher in Greenwich and Oxford before gaining her Qualified Teacher of Deaf Children and Young People (QToD) qualification in 2019. She then worked as a QToD for Oxfordshire County Council, supporting Deaf children and young people and their families. In 2025, Suzi left the profession to focus fully on Oxford BSL and her interpreter training.

Suzi is an active member of her local Deaf community, regularly attending coffee mornings and social evenings. These spaces allow her to sign with native BSL users, stay closely connected to Deaf culture and continue learning beyond formal study.

"Losing my hearing and learning BSL has changed my life. I went from worry about my future and choosing to learn BSL 'just in case', to making a whole host of friends in the Deaf community and starting my own business. I love what I do."

A fierce advocate for herself and others with hearing loss, Suzi’s work is rooted in lived experience as well as professional expertise. Through teaching BSL and delivering deaf awareness and accessibility training, she supports individuals and organisations to communicate more effectively, respectfully and inclusively.

Alice Robinson

Co-Founder of Simply SignBSL

BSL Teacher

Alice's journey into British Sign Language began in 2017 with an evening course, driven by a lifelong interest in the language. At the time, she was working with adults with special educational needs, teaching cheerleading and dance. Noticing that some students used sign language with their support workers, Alice was inspired to learn BSL to make her classes as inclusive as possible.

The immense joy and connection Alice felt when communicating directly with these students fuelled her desire to learn more. she quickly found she had a knack for the visual language and soon moved into roles directly the supporting the Deaf community - first as a Personal Assistant and later as a Communication Support Worker at a primary school. It was here she met her future business partners, Hannah and Suzi.

Although Alice eventually transitioned to a role outside of full-time BSL work, her passion for teaching and sharing the language remained strong. This led her and Hannah to establish Simply Sign BSL in 2023, starting with short beginner courses. The partnership with Oxford BSL in 2025 marked a new chapter, allowing them to begin teaching Level 1 courses.

"I feel incredibly passionate about teaching BSL and love seeing people go from knowing no sign language to being able to have full conversations with others in a short amount of time."

Alice is committed to helping others learn the valuable skill, whether for personal enjoyment or to foster better communication within the Deaf community.

Hannah Cummins

Hannah was introduced to BSL at the age of eight, which sparked a deep and lasting interest in this visual and expressive language. Her passion was ignited when she witnessed a profound moment: a friend's grandparent effortlessly communicating with their spouse without the use of spoken words. This experience left a significant impression on Hannah and, shortly afterwards, she received a BSL book as a Christmas gift, marking the beginning of her journey with BSL.

Over the years, Hannah has actively sought opportunities to expand her knowledge of BSL. She pursued a role as a Communication Support Worker at a primary school, eager to enhance both her skills and understanding of the language. She successfully completed her Level 3 Certificate, further advancing her expertise. Most recently, Hannah has embarked on her Level 6 training, continuing her professional development in the field.

Hannah is passionate about promoting BSL and enjoys sharing her knowledge with others to foster greater understanding and accessibility. Currently working within the education sector, she supports Deaf students in accessing the curriculum, advocates for Deaf awareness within the school community and collaborates with external agencies to elevate standards and improved services for Deaf individuals.
