Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language

This qualification is designed to develop your BSL knowledge and give you the tools to communicate better in real life situations, whilst improving your BSL grammar and understanding.

The course is delivered over 60 hours and aims to build on your foundation in BSL so you can better understand and use the grammar of BSL and have more in-depth conversations.

  • BSL 201 - Receptive skills

    Describing people and things, expressing attitudes and opinions, past and future events, regional variations.

    BSL 202 - Productive skills

    Combining simple sentences, presenting information, using language in everyday situations.

    BSL 203 - Conversational skills

    Recognising questions and responses about everyday topics, using appropriate vocabulary, maintaining a conversation.

  • Lessons are taught using a range of techniques:

    • vocabulary repetition

    • games

    • pair work

    • group work

    • practice conversations

    • practice presentations

    • watching videos

    • written homework

    Sessions are taught predominantly in BSL with English used only where necessary for clarification.

  • There are three assessments, one for each unit.

    201 is a receptive video to watch and answer multiple choice questions.

    202 is a presentation by the student that is filmed.

    203 is a conversation between the student and teacher that is filmed.

    All assessments are sent to be marked by a Signature assessor.

  • Students are required to have successfully completed the Level 1 Award in British Sign Language or demonstrate ability to Level 1 standard. Hearing students are required to have a reasonable standard of written and spoken English.

  • Students who successfully pass the Level 2 assessments can progress on to the Level 3 Certificate.
