Bruce Delfosse Graduation Interpreting

On Saturday I had the chance to flex my interpreting muscles by being one of the student interpreters at the Bruce Delfosse Graduation! The graduates were the successful students who had completed Part 2 of their Level 6 Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting and Translation and were going out into the world as fully-qualified Registered Sign Language Interpreters. Having just completed Part 1 with Bruce Delfosse myself, I was excited for those who had taken on and completed the whole diploma!

Interpreting the event was no mean feat, for a trainee interpreter, as the room was filled not just with my diploma tutors, but a dozen now-fully-qualified interpreters and members of the Deaf community. Whereas in many situations you can be assured that no-one except the Deaf client you are working with understands what you are signing, in this situation you couldn’t help but worry that you were being judged by 20 British Sign Language users! Fortunately, the team at Bruce Delfosse and the students on their courses are wonderful and I, along with my two fellow trainee interpreters, felt completely supported throughout the day.

It was a wonderful experience and marks my first step into the professional world of interpreting. I can’t wait to continue my journey and hopefully have my own graduation in the next few years!

A small hall is decorated in balloons and streamers. Members of the audience and graduates in gowns and mortar boards face the stage area where one student is receiving their diploma. Suzi is signing on one side of the stage area.
